Linux Consultancy
We are very enthusiastic about Linux, and helping people start using it.
What is Linux?
Linux is a relatively new operating system which is now the biggest rival of Microsoft® Windows®
Why should I use Linux?
If you use your computer for Office utilities and web based activities, then there really isn't a better operating system to use on your PC. Windows® is premium which a lot of home users could do without. A few facts about Linux:
- Linux is more secure
Because linux installations are a lot more customised than Windows® installations, needless applications are left out, so there's less risk of people being able to break into your computer over the internet. Linux is also less prone to viruses as the majority are Windows® only. - Linux is more stable
It takes a lot more to slow down and crash a Linux computer. - The best applications are free
No need to buy the applications you use on a daily basis, the best applications are developed by the community for free. - Linux is a lot harder to break
A correctly configured Linux computer will not let you delete important files easily, so it's far safer to experiment to learn more. - Support is always to hand
The most frequent questions for applications are usually made available for you to see, if you have any other problems/questions, most applications have a live chatroom which you can use to find the answer. - Developed by users
Linux software is designed and developed by the people who use it. This means that the features that you need in an application will most probably be there. - Microsoft® Windows® Compatible
Linux computers can communicate with Windows® computers in all the ways which you expect. Linux office suites can produce Microsoft Office compatible documents and they can even produce PDF files with a simple click of the mouse.
How do I get it, and learn to use it?
We can assist at all levels with the use of Linux. We don't use anything else for our personal computers, and with a little help you can get to the same standard
If you'd prefer a more user-friendly version of Linux, we can supply commercial desktop distributions (brands of Linux) such as SuSE and Red Hat depending on your needs. They are usually around the same price of Windows, although they come complete with all the applications you might need preconfigured.
How can I convert my business?
Workstations
Small and medium sized businesses can benefit from the same benefits as every Linux user. Your workstations can also be configured to restrict the use of games and other non-work related applications.
We can help audit the computer use of your staff, and suggest the best approach to Linux for your business.
Servers
Servers for either a Linux based network or Windows based network can benefit greatly from the speed and reliability of Linux. They can be made transparently compatible with your Windows workstations and have a lot lower TCO.
Commercial server distributions of Linux cost from around £190 and have no forced recurring charges. This means that you can save money on your IT budget.
We can provide a standard/commercial server distribution for your server. We prefer to use the freely available Gentoo Linux distribution because of it's level of customisation.
Technical Support
If you already use Linux in your business or at home, we can support your current configuration. We can support the majority of distributions and can provide both call-out and support contracts. Our support contracts are based entirely upon your requirements, so all prices are taylored to the contract.
